As the title says we cancelled our ABN in 2020 but just received an email saying the ATO will soon be cancelling our ABN due to inactivity. We have the confirmation email from 2020. What’s the best course of action?

Start by checking ABN Lookup to see whether the ABN is listed as active or cancelled. You say "we" so if this is a partnership and the ABN is active then there would be outstanding partnership returns. If this is the case contact the ATO for guidance.

It’s a sole trader business. It does say activate. Last updated the day the abn was supposed to have been cancelled. I guess I will need to contact the ATO to avoid needing to submit any tax docs for the years there was no activity.
