Hi,

I've moved from NZ to Australia this year and have started casual work. I began working before receiving my TFN so have been taxed 45%. Now I have obtained a TFN and am eligible for the free tax threshold. My employer is currently processing this so I will no longer get taxed.

However I am wondering if I can file a tax return early to claim back the money that I was taxed for earlier in the year? (As it is quite a lot of money and could be nice to have lol) Hope this makes sense, sorry still new to the whole tax thing (Under 18).

Also could anyone clarify - does my tax return need to be done before the EOFY or by October? I've heard different things.

Thanks!

Tax return can't be lodged until it is available, either through myTax, paper or through a tax agent. Usually this will be close to June 30. You need to declare all your income up to June 30 so lodging before this date is not advised. Lodging early is no advantage either as the Tax Office doesn't start processing refunds until about July 12 or so.

Due date for lodgment of tax return is October 30 if not using a tax agent. You may get an extension if lodging through a tax agent.
