I currently have an ABN number linked to an e-commerce registered business name (Business A). Now I started providing advertising/marketing services for a "Business B".

When I called the ABN customer care, they said I can't use this current ABN as it has a different business structure and that if I invoiced "Business B", the invoice would come with details from "Business A". They suggested for me to create a new ABN for Business B.

I started applying for a second ABN and I got the message "The entity already has an active Australian business number (ABN): xxxxxxx. There is no requirement to submit another ABN application for this entity."

Question:

#1 How do I proceed to apply for a new ABN?

#2 Do I actually need to apply for a new ABN for business B?

Thanks!

Each business entity, whether sole trader or company can only have one ABN.

An entity may carry on more than one type of business under the same ABN.

So unless you are going to create a new entity (company, trust or partnership) for the new enterprise there is no need for another ABN.
