Hello,

I need some advice please. I have private hospital insurance but just realised it doesn't offset the MSL because it is an overseas visitors cover. I am on the 482 visa so cannot get a normal australian private health one to offset the MSL but I am considered 'Australian' when I am paying tax. I have to pay the MSL as I have medicare and cant seem to find an overseas cover that offsets this.

Is there one out there that offsets the MSL when on a 482 visa? I am not really sure how its fair that I have to pay it when I am paying the same tax as citizens and I also have the right hospital cover so I am hoping there is an option out there to offset this somehow.

If there isn't one once I have PR can I get a normal healthcare package and offset this? Or will I have to still pay the MSL as I have been in the country longer than a year and I am over 31??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I will loose a lot of my salary from working hard offshore due to this.

Thanks

I am assuming you are on 482 but you have applied for PR after getting the invite and hence you have received Medicare entitlement. In this case, you can change your overseas cover to Local cover which is meant for PR and Citizens. You need to get Life Health Cover letter from Medicare and submit it to your insurance company who will then convert your overseas cover to local cover (even if you are on 482 because they know that you have applied for PR and entitled for Medicare). This way you will be able to avoid MLS (Medicare Levy Surcharge)
