I have been taxed on my mileage claim and don't understand why
An allowance received for using your car is taxable income and is included in your tax return. If the travel is tax deductible (Trips you can and can't claim | Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au) you can claim a deduction using either the cents/km or logbook method. If your vehicle is not classed as a car you use actual expenses. See links
