Hi,

I have a Bachelor of Commerce (Major Accounting) and I've recently completed a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping. I would like to do freelance Bookkeeping work and I was wondering if I can offer paid bookkeeping services if I'm not a registered BAS Agent?

The following are general bookkeeping services that I would offer to my clients:

  • Chart of Account set up
  • Categorising / processing transactions
  • Bank Reconciliations
  • Data Entry / Record keeping
  • Accounts Payable/ Accounts Receivable
  • Processing Payments
  • Producing General Reports e.g. Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, Trial Balance etc.

I look forward to your response. Thank you.

Best regards,

Natalia

Hi @Talia1412

Most of your list should be fine.

Things like data entry depends. If you're entering data to a spreadsheet to provide to the client for example, that's fine. If you're entering data to an activity statement for lodgement, that's not fine. You may also find issue with some payment processing.

The Tax Practitioners Board website has a good example list of BAS services.

It sounds like you're well qualified to provide advice, guidance and reports. Without registering as a BAS agent, you won't be able make submissions on behalf of the client. You'd also need to be a personal authorised contact if they ever wanted you to talk to us on their behalf.
