Hi I am employed as a FIFO employee for a Mining Company and spend 7 nights per week away from home staying in a mining camp. The company charges me for both accommodation and food whilst I am there and I receive no stated meal allowance in my pay. Can I claim this cost as a tax deduction as I am required to stay there in order to do my job and pay for food and accom myself ?

Hiya @FIFO_Surveyor ๐Ÿ‘‹

To assist taxpayers claim deductions at Tax Time, the ATO has Occupation and industry-specific guides. They have one specifically for Mining site employees that includes Deductions for work expenses that specifically addresses your question about Travel expenses.

How good is that? Have a good look at the range of items to make sure you haven't forgotten anything ๐Ÿ˜‰
