Hi team,

I am currently employed in two seperate jobs and am seeking clarity around whether I can claim the cents per km method for travel.

I work 3 days a week from home for my first job, I have a secure terminal from home where I can complete my employment.

For one day of the week I need to travel from my home where it is my base of employment to my second job. This job is completely seperate from my first job, different employer and different tasks, this second job requires me to work onsite due to the nature of the job.

Would I be able to claim travel costs between my base of employment to my second job? My confusion here stems from this statement where it clearly excludes travel from home

"Go between 2 or more separate places of employment, such as if you have more than one job (but not if one of the places is your home)"

However my home is my base of employment as

  • Im required to start your employment duties at home then travel to your regular place of work to complete those particular duties (I start work from home for my first job and I need to travel to my regular place of work for my second job)
  • Undertaking the work in 2 locations is necessary due to the nature of your employment duties. (My second role requires me to be onsite)
  • The trip to your regular place of work isn't part of a normal trip to work that would have occurred anyway. (The trip from my regular place of work of home isn't part of a normal trip to work as it's for a seperate work journey)

Thank you

Hi @bobasteve

Not in this case.

As you have said for job 1 your home is your base of employment. So, if you had to make a trip into Job 1's office one day for a specific reason, this would be an example of when you could claim a deduction for this travel.

However, from what you're saying you're traveling from your home to Job 2. Since your home is not your base of employment for Job 2 this trip is not deductable (as its from home to place of employment).

Even though your home is base of employment for job 1, this doesn't mean it is for job 2 as well.

I would have a read over our example here about home is base of employment.
