Hi I need some information on claiming Medicare levy exemption on dependent category. I’m the only person working in the family I have a kid and wife isn’t working, I take care of all the expenses as said by maintenance of dependent category. Can I claim Medicare levy
So for claiming the Medicare Levy Exemption there are 3 categories that can be claimed each with their own rules.
1. Medical Exemption
- You were a blind pensioner
- you were entitled to full free medical treatment for all conditions under either
- Defence Force arrangements
- Veterans’ Affairs Repatriation Health Card (Gold Card).
2.A Foreign Resident for Tax purposes if
- the full year, you can claim a full exemption from the Medicare levy
- only part of the year, you can still claim full exemption from the Medicare levy for that period if
-you didn't have any dependants for that period
-all your dependants were in a Medicare levy exemption category for that period
3.Not entitled to Medicare
- have a Medicare Entitlement statement (MES) showing you were not entitled to Medicare benefits because you were a temporary resident for Medicare purposes, and either
- you did not have any dependants for that period
- all your dependants (including your spouse) were also in a Medicare levy exemption category for that period
- are a member of a diplomatic mission or consular post in Australia and meet other conditions.
This can all be found on this site https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/medicare-and-private-health-insurance/medicare-levy/medicare-levy-exemption
Now it seems you may be confusing the final page that is on that link "Dependent's for Medicare Levy Exemption".
This forth page is more an informational page as to what constitutes as a "Dependent" for Medicare Levy purposes you will see this appear in the 3 categories.
Unfortunately unless you fall under one of those three categories you will not be eligible for an exemption.
Generally all Australian Residents will pay Medicare Levy which is 2% of their taxable income unless they fall into one of those three categories.
