I am trying to help my son lodge his return through myTax. During the year he received Jobseeker payments and had tax deducted. He later repaid all Jobseeker payments as he became ineligible due to a compensation payment. His payments are $0 but tax paid is $303. Centrelink have not prefilled his data and there is no payment summary as he received $0 but he needs to have the tax withheld and already remitted to the ATO reflected in his tax return. He has tried to manually add the data however it errors saying "The tax withheld is greater than or equal to the amount of income. Check and correct.", and he cannot save the data and continue. Does anyone know how to fix this to enable the return to be finalised?

Hi @kdsmith71

He should check with Centrelink to see if the amounts he repaid included the tax withheld or not. They should issue a payment summary if they've paid tax to us on your sons behalf.

He has checked with Centrelink and while they seemed confused initially, they have said they have ordered a payment summary that will be mailed to him over the next 14 days. They were unable to print it for him on the spot. That said, it is a simple exercise to establish from his Centrelink payment history that the amount he repaid was the total of gross payments made to him and included the tax withheld.

The difficulty comes when adding this information in myTax. Whether we have a payment summary in front of us or not doesn't matter as it is a manual add of the data. As per my initial post, when we add the data it errors ("The tax withheld is greater than or equal to the amount of income. Check and correct.") and doesn't allow him to finalise his return. How does he override this error to add the data and finalise the return?

Thanks
