I live regionally and have worked fully remote for the last year as an engineer. During that year we have had four days where the power has been off all working ours while they do works on the line around us. As I do not want to take these days off and use annual leave I purchased a $600 petrol generator that I use to power my computer set up and wifi when the power is out. It is only used to power my computer during working hours. Question is can I claim this and is there a depreciation cycle on it ?
I hope that you don't keep losing power, that must be so frustrating. But what a good idea, at least you're not losing pay or leave.
Check out the info about claiming work from home expenses. (WFH) Make sure you keep a record of the date and the length of time that you needed to use it. In case we ask you to verify the info.
There are a couple of ways you can calculate the amount when using it for WFH.
They are fixed rate v actual cost method. it'll depend on your personal situation which one is appropriate.
See Depreciating assets you use for work on how to claim the cost of the generator.

I wonder if @Emilyprosser was able to figure this out? Please let me know if ended up claiming if from you tax return.
Could ATO officials please confirm if the generator and solar equipment service, repair and depreciation can be claimed from the personal tax return for full time employees living off-grid if there is no way to connect to grid power at all.
Hi @natashaoffwego,
Generally, no you wouldn't be able to claim all the costs of generator and solar equipment services, repairs or depreciations. You may be eligible to claim a portion of what we would consider additional running expenses, like any other employee working from home (off grid or not).
You wouldn't be able to claim any general expense that relates to using normal household facilities e.g. running your fridge, lights, TV, plumbing. The cost would need to be directly related to completing your work. Living off grid doesn't automatically make household costs deductible.
