Hi ATO,

Can businesses claim life insurance as an expense? Our insurance partner said life insurance is tax deductible for businesses especially for director life insurance as this will affect the business when something happens to the director. The business will have cash flow for surviving.

Thank you

Howdy Leon317777,

Life insurance premiums are not tax-deductible for businesses in Australia. You can claim a tax deduction for most expenses you incur in carrying on your business if they are directly related to earning your assessable income. However, life insurance premiums are typically considered a personal expense and not directly related to the earning of assessable income.

There are some exceptions where life insurance can be a deductible business expense. For example, when the policy is provided as part of a group plan to employees as a benefit. If the life insurance policy is offered to employees as part of their remuneration package, the premiums may be deductible.
