Hello. I recently received book royalties from Amazon, and would like to clarify how I need to report it. And who I need to report it to. Given this is the first time I'll be dealing with foreign income.

I am both an Australian citizen and resident for tax purposes. I have completed a W-8BEN form. So I think I'm right there. Where I am getting stuck, is Amazon has withheld US Federal Tax on my behalf. Do I need to complete a tax return with the USA IRS? Or just account for the book royalties, as foreign income, and lodge with the ATO like normal.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

As a follow up.

I was finally able to get in contact with an accountant that focuses on helping US Expats. According to their advice: As an alien for US Tax purposes, you don't need to lodge a return unless you earn over $100,000 gross. Below that, you are fine to just declare it as foreign income on an ATO return.
