Hello, I have a query regarding the taxation of earnings from YouTube. I operate a small YouTube channel that recently achieved monetisation, allowing me to earn income through views and Google ads. Currently, I am earning approximately $200 per month, and my YouTube payslip shows income tax deductions. Despite reporting my regular 9 to 5 income for tax purposes, I cannot locate my YouTube earnings and associated taxes on the ATO portal. I have provided my tax file number to YouTube, but I'm uncertain why this data isn't appearing in the ATO records.

Additionally, I've invested in a laptop, camera, and video editing software for my YouTube activities. Can I still claim these work-related expenses on my tax return, even if my YouTube income isn't visible on the ATO portal?

Lastly, considering my YouTube activities as a career, would this classify me as self-employed or a business owner? If so, do I need to apply for an ABN?

Your assistance in clarifying these matters would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi @TimmyD21

Yes.

You do need to declare the income and tax withheld.

It may not have been reported to us yet, which is why it's not showing in the pre-fill.
