Hi everyone,

I'm a foreign national coming to Australia from Germany in October on a 186 visa and want to start a business as a sole trader, since my current employer would be able to hire me as an independent contractor. If possible, I would like to set up the business in advance so that I can draft a proper offer and contract. Can I already apply for an ABN before coming to Australia, even though I do not have a registered business in Germany?

I got the impression that it's not really feasible. But it's hard to find information on this specific case, so any advice is greatly appreciated!

You should only apply for an ABN if you are entitled to have one. See this link

@Taxduck thanks for your reply! I will check to make sure I meet the business commencement requirements for starting an enterprise. In case I am to meet them, do you happen to know if I can apply for an ABN from abroad before coming to Australia?
