I am trying to submit my tax return from the UK after leaving Australia, completing my first year WHV.
I had a mygov account, but it was linked to my old Australian mobile number which I no longer have access to. As a result, I have made a new MyGov account. I have called the ATO to get a linking code to link mygov services and the ATO, but because I have left the country and my documents have expired (visa, Medicare) the advisor told me they were unable to verify my identity and I would need to self lodge via the post.
I have my TFN, passport and old visa number alongside my old work contacts and my superannuation information.
The problem is, I’m certain my tax information has been sent to my old gov account, meaning I don’t even have the information I need to post a self return. In addition, it can take up to 8 days to post, and another 50 to review, cutting me short if there are any problems with the form.
Is there no other way I can prove my identity to link to the ATO? This is really stressful. It’s really frustrating as I have all the documents required, but they are saying they can’t verify who I am. I have been passed to 5 different lines and I am calling from the UK so it is getting expensive with no results.
