For about three years now my employer has been paying an extra $20 per fortnight to tax. I started paying extra on my Centrelink half way through this year. If my employer is paying the correct tax for my income and I am paying extra why did I owe over $100 to the ATO this year.

Howdy @LoveDragons,

There are several reasons why you might still owe money to us despite paying extra tax.

It may have something to do with the half year you didn't have tax withheld from your Centrelink payments.

Your employer is not withholding enough still.

You have a HECS debt, and you've met the compulsory repayment threshold.

When you get your NOA, you'll be able to see your taxable income and the amount of tax that should have been withheld on that income. Plus, you'll see the amount that has been withheld.

Thank you Matt for replying. I don't have a debt to anyone and my employer has said they are paying the right amount of tax for my income. Also I have never had to pay tax out of my Centrelink ever until this year. If I didn't start paying tax out of Centrelink I would have owed around $450. I am in my 50's and have never had to pay money back. It is very sad that the government has said that we will have more money in our pockets, but at the same time don't say that you will be out of pocket when you put your tax in. Thanks again.
