G'day everyone;

some time ago it was possible for the employer to simply pay the superannuation into the employee's fund, directly; no intermediaries required; it would take no more than a few days to see the funds in my super account;

Fast forward to today, it seems this isn't possible anymore or isn't that simple anymore;

Specifically, the place I work for, is adamant in its position of making super payments through the SBSCH; and note; the SBSCH is a free service from the ATO itself, so the employer will NEVER switch to a paid service;

the problem is that, according to what I am told by the employer, even if the employer's accountant's office does send the required excel spreadsheet to the specified email one or two weeks before the due date, then the ATO takes forever (way beyond the due date for the super period) and as a consequence the funds on my super account show up WAY too late and WAY beyond the due date set by the ATO itself.

So, ... firstly, am I being told the truth? Does the Employer has the correct understanding of the required procedure? (They may be doing something incorrectly not understanding the Australian taxation system, causing unnecessary delays without even realizing they are getting it wrong in the first pace); Why the ATO's SBSCH takes so long to reply to the accountant with the actual payment instructions? And how can this be rectified / streamlined?

I am starting to become really quite upset by this never ending discharge of responsibilities between the employer and teh ATO's SBSCH.

It is simply not acceptable!

What can be / should be done to solve this?

Thanks,

kind regards,

Your faithful Tax Payer.

HI @Stefano2

I think you are misinterpreting your employer or being led astray.

The Small Business Clearing House is an online system.

You don't "send an excel" to any address. (I note: Your employer may be sending an email to an external accountant who is taking the time to process it, not the ATO)

You simply enter the super payable directly into the portal and it generates a combined payment slip instantly.

The employer then pays the one payment to the ATO and the ATO breaks it down to each employee's superfund.

It ain't as quick as getting it directly but it's not as bad an experience as you appear to be having.

Hi Stefano2,

Your employer is right. They'll have to use the Clearing House option, an online system, to make SG payments to the employees. 👍

No excel sheet is needed. The employer/accountant must submit an instruction form, either monthly or quarterly. Then, they must pay us within 7 days to process it. Maybe your employer was paying it directly to the Superfund monthly. Now, they have chosen to pay quarterly, so you feel there's a delay.!

Errors in the instruction form may cause further delays. It might take some time for the employer or accountant to get used to the process. But it will eventually get better and quicker.

Be a bit patient if they're new to the system. It may not seem as quick as getting it directly. But it's important for them to be compliant.

Thank you @TobyJDodd and @MeghaATO;

however, it is exactly as I said;

in my specific case, my employer is a non-individual employer holder of a WPN and it is a foreign consulate; i.e. it goes under the category of "embassies", as specified in the relevant page;

so, it appears they do not have access to the online facility you mention but, rather, they must complete the SBSCH – Employee list spreadsheet (XLSX, 57KB) and then email it to SBSCHenquiries@ato.gov.au – including the words ‘WPN HOLDER’ in the email subject line;

the last time they sent the spreadsheet was start of July, they got an email back from the SBCH last week with the payment instructions and they paid the same day; then, last Friday (two days ago 16th August) they received an email from the SBCH saying that they had proceeded with paying the money into my super fund; being Friday, I don't see the money in my super account yet;

And no, "Maybe your employer was paying it directly to the Superfund monthly. Now, they have chosen to pay quarterly, so you feel there's a delay.!" .. that never happened;

And no, my employer deal directly with the SBCH, no intermediate accountant exist.

I am really quite distressed about this whole thing, because the end result is that I don't see my money when I should and there is no way to ID who is really at fault; everybody blames someone else!

But I tend to blame the SBSCH in this case, as they DO take forever to process the transactions, reply to emails and they take their time to transfer the money they receive from my employer to my super fund; this system is supposed to streamline the whole process, but in this case it does exactly the very opposite;

can my employer, being a non-individual employer with a WPN, use the automated online portal as well? And if so, where do I find this in writing, together with proper instructions on how to do so?

Also, I cant lodge an online complaint because the online system rejects the WPN number, saying it doesn't exist.

If someone from the ATO is reading this, can you PLEASE get in touch with me to rectify this situation?

Thanks,

regards.
