Hello,

I am in Australia on working holiday visa. First day I arrived I applied for my TFN. I got a job few days later and told my employer I am still waiting for it. I provided him the number 8 days later.

Today I got my first payslip and 45% tax was deducted.

My question is: Can I get the tax back? And if yes should I ask the employer or just wait to the end of a year to apply for tax return.

Thank you very much

Hey @Fotbalista123,

Did you let your employer know that you'd applied for the TFN when you started?

You have 28 days to give employers your TFN once you start a new job before they start withholding at the higher tax rate, but you need to tell them you've applied for the TFN and are waiting for it to come through. If they've withheld at the higher tax rate for this pay, you'll need to wait until you lodge your tax return for us to work out the right amount. If you've had too much tax withheld, you'll be refunded the extra if you don't have other tax or government liabilities.

As long as they've got your TFN now, they should withhold the right tax rate for your future payments.
