I have a full time job and want to complete some Uber Eats Delivery Driving as a second job to earn some extra money on weekends.

Could you please confirm the following:

  • As I’m not driving people, I don’t have to register for GST if I’m earning under $75,000 for that job? Or is it $75,000 for the combined incomes?

  • When registering for an ABN, I know I have to select ‘Sole Trader’ but what do I select in the drop down box named - What is the nature of your activity?

  • I used the tax withheld for individuals calculator on the ATO website and I entered that I would be making a guess of $2000 monthly and I selected that I’m not claiming the tax free threshold, it came back with an amount of $381 that I would pay for tax for that month. Does my full time job earnings affect these amounts?

  • Am I able to pay my tax quarterly via PAYG instalments?

I just want to make sure that I’m not missing anything when paying tax.

Thank you.

In the form of a business, is the correct choice.

Then when asked business activity then food delivery

Hello,

As long as it is just UberEats you do not have to register for GST as long as the income from UberEats does not exceed 75k. Please note if you start doing Uber you are required to register for GST regardless of the income amounts.

If you are doing UberEats I would assume the nature of your activity would be food delivery.

Yes, when taxtime comes both your UberEats earnings and your fulltime job earnings will be combined to create your assessable income, if you have not had enough tax withheld from both these income streams you may need to pay additional tax.

You can choose your PAYGI cycles when enrolling, so yes you can opt for quarterly.

Thanks!

Hello, thank you for your response.

Unfortunately there is no option to select food delivery, the options include:

  • Apprentice, trade assistant or labourer
  • In the form of a business
  • Renting or leasing out of a property
  • in the form of a license, lease or other grant of an interest property
  • one-off commercial transactions not done in the course of a business
