As a non-student Dependent, on an Extras Only Private Health Insurance Policy, I'm confused by the information on the ATO website. It appears contradictory.

The Private Health Insurance Rebate Eligibility page says that complying health insurance policies need to provide either:

1) Hospital Cover only

2) Combined Hospital & General/Extras

The Claiming The Private Health Insurance Rebate page instead says that the rebate can be claimed for premiums paid for a private health insurance policy that provides either:

1) Hospital Cover only

2) Extras/General Cover Only

3) Combined Hospital & General/Extras

One page says excludes Extras Only policies and the other page includes them. Are Extra Policies included or not? If I was an Adult instead with an Extras Only policy, do I fill in this part of the Tax Return?

As a non-student Dependent, do I still need to complete anything for Private Health Insurance when completing my Tax Return?

Hi @redpiper,

Thank you so much for pointing that out! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Claiming the private health insurance rebate webpage is correct. You can claim the rebate for extras policy.

You have to be eligible for Medicare and the policy has to cover you to get the rebate. You must also meet the income thresholds. ๐Ÿค”

What it won't cover you for is the Medicare Levy surcharge. That you'll still be liable for, if you go over the income level.

If you're covered by the policy and want to claim the rebate, then you'd fill it out. Did they send you a private health insurance statement yet?

These will tell you what to put at what labels in the tax return. ๐Ÿ“ฐ
