I am in the process of purchasing a new car under a novated lease and had a discussion with the leasing company regarding additional items. Specifically, I am considering adding a tow bar, a dash cam (which will be affixed to the windshield), professional ceramic coating, and a selection of car care products such as car wash shampoo, leather cleaner, wheel cleaner, and polish.

The leasing company has indicated that all these additions would increase the FBT value of the car, as they are considered attached to it. However, my accountant is of the opinion that apart from the tow bar, which is a permanent improvement, the other items should not contribute to the FBT base value (considering consumables). The dash cam is removable (life ranging from 2-5 years), while the ceramic coating (ceramic coating typically lasts 2-3 years) and car care products are consumables. If car wash can be a pre-tax deduction and not added to FBT base value, then car care products shouldn't be either.

Could you please clarify whether all these items or only the tow bar should affect the FBT value of the vehicle?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi @amitchoutdhary

When an employer pays for expenses that you'd normally be responsible be for then that's a fringe benefit. It sounds like these additions will cost extra hence increasing the value of your benefit.

The arrangement is between you, your employer and the provider but ultimately it's your decision to accept the novate lease or not. We always recommend getting financial advice first.
