Hello!

I have just lodged my FY24 return with an accountant and was also advised to amend my FY23 return due to a discrepancy in my private health rebate. I'm a little confused and would like some clarification on my situation please!

Information:

  • I am in a defacto relationship and we welcomed our first child in 2023
  • FY23 I had to pay back a portion of my Private Health Insurance rebate as I was on the base rebate Tier when I should have been on Tier 2 (I also incorrectly did not record that I now had a dependent).
  • FY24 my income fell into Tier 1 and I was on base Tier
  • My partner and I hold separate (single) health insurance policies and my child is not currently covered by private health insurance

I was advised that I need to include my partners income and document our private health as a "Family" which brings us into Tier 2 despite not being on the same private health policy or technically a "spouse". This was done for both FY23 & FY24 lodgments.

Is this correct? Or can I claim my dependent on my "Single" private health insurance policy thus being eligible for the lower Tier? Initially the tax accountant believed this was the case as our policies are completely separate but amended it later.
