Our new employee lives in Australia, we are based in NZ. We can't use an NZ payroll option to pay her (which would track leave etc) - but we will use an intermediary currency exchange/payment platform to get the net AUD monies owed to her, on a weekly pay run basis. But how do we determine her tax on wages and all other required Australian tax deductions? We know we'll need to pay 11.5% super - assume this could be paid directly to the ATO? Any help/suggestions for an entire payroll platform that would work for us, as an NZ trading business but paying an Australian employee would be best - or some other type of 'work around' to be compliant in both countries. Many thanks
Hi @NZSmallBusiness,
This is a question that requires you to self assess, we can provide you with links for reference to help in your situation.
Check out our ATO online Tax withheld calculator to estimate the amount of tax to withhold from the employee's wages.
You'll need to register for PAYG withholding as you'll be withholding tax.
You're correct in paying 11.5% super. This can be paid to the employees nominated super fund. If they don't have a super fund, you can use the ATO's Small business superannuation clearing house.
You'll need to register for a STP payroll provider, more info can be found on our website.
