Hello

I am looking to start studying a PhD and receive the full RTP stipend ($35,411). However, it does say that you must not be receiving another source of income that is greater than 75% of the students RTP stipend rate from another source.

I am currently working full time but have been approved by my work to drop back to part time (earning $60k on part time salary) to complete my PhD. My university supervisors are also aware of this.

Can I still receive the RTP stipend but have it taxed? Would the tax implications just be on $95k?

I hadn’t been advised of the 75% conditions prior so I am a little unsure where to go from here now.

Thank you in advance!

Howdy @ejohns14,

That is almost 2.5 times 75% of the stipend. At this point I would have to recommend talking to your uni's post grad research office or financial aid office to discuss alternative funding options.

But if they were to allow you to exceed the by that much the stipend is considered tax free generally.
