my son has started a rigging job and has heard that alot of the boys claim fuel and car expenses. I have tried to find out abut the tools and how many you need and the total weight they each have to be before you can claim this but i cant find that info anywhere other than they have to be bulky items. they travel to different sites all the time. they have to carry their own tools such as hard hat etc, im not sure what else yet. they need to take them home each night or they could be stolen.
The ATO does not provide a clear definition for bulky items which can make things difficult when considering claiming vehicle expenses for carrying tools.
There appears to be a couple of schools of thought. One is if the item or items are such that they could not be reasonably carried on public transport then there is a genuine need to use your own vehicle to carry them. Another is carrying around 20kg of tools. Above this then a vehicle is needed to carry them.
Pass either of the above and you should be right to claim.
If the ATO review a vehicle expenses claim they will require the following.
A list of items carried.
A letter from their employer stating that they are required to transport their tools and equipment as their is no secure area provided to store them at their workplace or workshop.
