Hi there,

Couple of quick questions regarding income and expenses related to blogging. For background, we have a partnership ABN, and as such intend to complete the partnership tax return in addition to our personal returns.

While the blog is only recently monetised we are receiving affiliate income from products and services we recommend and also expect to start receiving advertising revenue from ad networks in the near future.

1) If this income (affiliate or advertising) comes from companies based overseas and is paid in a currency other than AU$ (e..g US$) is the income considered foreign source income? And if so, which section of the partnership tax return should it be recorded?

2) Also, do we declare the income based on the US$ amount, the amount we received in AU$ once the income is received in our Australian bank account, or calculate using some other method?

It’s worth noting the income does not relate to work undertaken overseas, it’s just the entity sending the payment.

With regard to blog operating costs, we often have software and web hosting expenses in US$, paid to various entities around the globe.

3) Do these expenses get recorded in AU$ as shown on our Australian credit card bill, or does the cost of the expense need to be calculated in a different way?

Any advice on the above would be really appreciated.

Hi @ J_A_H,

No, it's only for Australian source income or loss at item 20. Only then you need to complete item 54.

Check out the instructions to complete item 54 statement of distribution in the partnership tax return.

Thanks Polly, appreciate the update.

Would you also mind asking one additional question if you don't mind.

In the partnership tax return, is the most appropriate place for blogging expenses (such as software subscriptions and hosting fees), the entry for “all other expenses”?

Again thanks for the support.

Hey @J_A_H,

We’ll answer your questions in the numbers you gave them to us below.

  1. This income is foreign and worldwide income because you earned it from companies outside Australia. As an Australian tax resident, you're required to declare this on your Australian tax return. This income should be recorded in the foreign income section- items 22 to 24.
  2. When declaring income, you should convert the income from USD to Australian dollars by using the exchange rate applicable at the time of income was earned. You can use our foreign income conversion calculator to help with this.
  3. You need to declare these expenses in Australian dollars using the above conversion method.
  4. If these expenses are business expenses, they should go under all other expenses .

Thanks for the response BrookeATO

If all of our partnership income is foreign source, but the business expenses result an overall loss, should this be recorded anywhere on item 54 of the partnership tax return (statement of distribution)?

For example, what would we do for the statement of distribution if the income and expenses were as follows:

  • $2,000 foreign source income (recorded in partnership return at Item 22).
  • $3,000 in expenses (recorded in partnership return under all other expenses at Item 5)
  • $1,000 loss (recorded in partnership return at Item 24).

As you can see the business is extremely small so I don't want to incur expenses in completing the return so many thanks for the continued support.
