Hi everyone,

I work two jobs, with my main job being an on-site computer technician. Each day, I travel from home to a depot to pick up computer parts for my assigned site visits, and then I visit more than two sites for work, which can vary daily, whether it is for residential or commercial clients. After completing my site visits, I either return home or head straight to my second job.

I’m trying to understand what travel expenses I can claim as business trips. Can I claim:

  • Travel from home to the depot and between the sites?
  • Travel from the last site back home?
  • Travel from my last site directly to my second job?

Please note, that I receive a travel allowance and fuel card from my employer due to using my personal car for work purposes.

Thanks in advance for any clarification!

I would suggest that the travel from home to the depot and any travel back home would not be a deductible expense as this appears to be a regular workplace. Travel to other work sites and from last site to second job are all deductible expenses.

Link below is to when home to work travel is deductible.

Trips you can and can't claim | Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au)

Itinerant type work (see hyperlink) is very close (but not the same) to your situation. The difference being the first leg of your travel is from home to the depot and not to an uncertain work site.

Someone else may have a different opinion.
