I am currently employed as a mechanical maintainer (fitter) and hold a [Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical (MEM30219)], which is a requirement for my role.

My job involves working with various mechanical systems, including pumps, crushers, drives, and motors etc.

I am considering pursuing a 'Master of Professional Engineering - Mechanical Engineering' to further my knowledge and improve my skills in these areas.

Given that this course would help me gain a deeper understanding of advanced mechanical concepts and enhance my current job performance, would the expenses related to this study be tax-deductible?

I would appreciate your guidance on whether this type of educational cost qualifies for a deduction.

Thank you for your assistance.

Depends on whether your employer will confirm that it is necessary for your position.

Thank you for your advice.

Yes, my previous employer did confirm that pursuing the degree would be an advantage for my role, and they offered to support me financially. However, nothing was documented in writing, and I didn’t take the offer because it required me to remain employed for two years after graduation.

I have since moved to a new company, still in the same role, and they offer similar financial support, but I need to work here for over a year to qualify, which I haven't met yet.

Also, I don’t believe I am in a position to request a letter of confirmation from my former employer as proof.

Is there any other way to demonstrate this for tax deduction purposes?
