Am I exempt from medicare surcharge levy if

  • I became a permanent resident in August 2023
  • I only apply for Medicare in February 2024
  • During this period, I was still paying for private health insurance.

Given this, am I correct to say that I should be exempt from medicare levy for the period July 2023 to February 2024?

Hi @JeremyT51,

That sounds about right.

If you have an appropriate level of private health insurance while you're a permanent resident, the MLS won't apply. And if you were exempt from paying the Medicare levy before becoming a PR (July 2023), you'd be exempt for the MLS for that time too.

Once you're a PR though, you'd be liable for the MLS for any period that you don't have an appropriate level of private health insurance if you earn above the income threshold.
