Should i have received an email when i apply confirming you had received my application? Or should i have shown my ID/passport? Or do i just apply online and then wait to receive the tfn in the post and do nothing else? Thanks

Can you clarify how you applied? Was it through Australia Post? Usually if you apply this way, you'd need to print the summary with your reference number and book an interview with Aust Post. During the interview is where you show your proof of I.D.
If you applied through a third party, you'd need to reach out to them.
