Hi! I'm applying for an ABN and I'm a bit stuck on picking a category that would best describe my main business activity. I'm applying as a sole trader to sell art at small local events for now and hopefully online and bigger conventions in the future. I'll be selling things such as art prints, stickers, bookmarks, collectables, key chains, comics and illustration books, plus more, of my original artwork using digital art, printing and assembling merchandise myself or making some items by hand using traditional art such as paintings. Other art I'd like to expand to in the future would be screen printing clothes and commissioning artwork for advertising or personal use. I'm not sure what "own account" refers to but I've considered categories such as - 'Painter or Artist - own account' and 'Creative artists - own account' or 'Creative arts service', 'Art and craft retailing'? And 'Retailing - direct selling' or 'Direct selling (including online stores)'. I'd really appreciate any advice on what category fits my business best and any information as to what certain categories entail.

Thank you.

Hi @ImTrotr,

I know it's mind-boggling to see so many activities to pick from!

From the choices you've included, I'd say Creative artists - own account (Business code 90029) might fit the best because it includes a number of different art- based services. Own account refers to being self-employed (a freelancer/ independent operator), which also fits you going into this as a sole trader.

The retailing/ direct selling seems more about the selling on of pre-made goods (not your own items) from a store-based premises. So doesn't quite link up.

It really comes down to selecting one that you feel suits your business model the best. Some of the categories mash, which makes it tricky. But if you can justify why you've picked a certain category over another, then things should be okay as long as the description closely matches what you're doing 🙂
