Current definition of an honorarium is either an honorary reward for voluntary services, or a fee for professional services voluntarily performed.
I work at a university and we have members of the public (called health consumers/community members) come and advise our researchers on the lived experience perspective of whatever they are researching, e.g. cancer, diabetes. Researchers need to ensure community members/end users of the research have a voice in what research is being conducted, and that the research reflect community priorities/needs.
We usually pay our consumers via honorariums, either by bank transfer or gift card.
- Can we use an hourly rate for honorariums? Or does this move them into wage/salary territory?
- For many consumers, we pay them multiple honorariums throughout the year. Are honorariums only supposed to be one-off/ad hoc? Would multiple payments mean we are moving into employee territory?
Thanks in advance for your help.
