I have been getting child support consistently for years of $40 a fortnight , roughly. Now it has reduced to $20 a fortnight. I have not got any information from Centrelink or child support about the change either. I found out that the father has got employment which would explain the drop in child support since it is directly taken from Centrelink. So what he is reporting is enough to drop his Centrelink payment and change the amount in child support. My question is, isn't child support suppose to increase ? I won't ask him myself what is happening as he has never been happy paying such a small amount yet alone paying an increase. Will ato pick up on this at the end of financial year or do I have to take a lose ?
Hi @Mum03,
Child support is income based, so it'll depend what they get paid now. I think salary sacrificing can reduce your total salary and possibly affect the amount of child support one would have to pay.
This is really a question for Services Australia though as the ATO only take into consideration what a person pays in CS and can withhold refunds to pay off any government debts (like CS) if they're outstanding.
Working out what someone has to pay in child support isn't always cut and dry, so it's best to reach out to the department who handle it as they're the ones who can help you the most. 🍀
