Tax was withheld from Jobseeker payment then Carer claim approved and backdated. Income changed from taxable to non-taxable but tax had already been withheld during the year. PAYG Payment Summary from Centrelink shows $0 income $250 tax withheld. Couldn't enter this info into MyTax online - gave an error. Thought ATO would data match this when return lodged. $250 not picked up by ATO on Notice of Assessment. How do I get this tax withheld back?

Hi @Megs.,

Sorry to hear that there's been a bit of an issue with your return.

You're correct, data matching does take place with other agencies such as Centrelink when we process returns. Alongside this, Centrelink would likely have passed on any tax withheld to us on payments you received. When you lodge your return, we would then see that too much was withheld based on your reported income and refund the additional amount. However, these amounts generally don't appear separate on your Notice of Assessment (NOA) - it all shows as a whole tax withheld value.

It may be worthwhile adding up all of your tax withheld amounts on your different income sources (wages and Centrelink, etc.) and comparing this with your NOA amount. This will help to identify if the $250 has already been included within the assessment and refunded to you.

Hopefully this helps, but please let us know what you find and we can advise from there!

The $250 wasn’t included in the total tax withheld on my notice of assessment and it hasn’t been refunded to me. How can I have this refunded to me.
