Hi,

I’m asking this question on behalf of my mother. She has some savings in her bank account, but the bank has withheld half of the interest because she doesn’t have a Tax File Number (TFN). She applied for the 864 visa several years ago but left Australia for personal reasons and no longer holds a valid Bridging Visa A. If she returns to Australia on a 600 visa, how can she apply for a TFN as quickly as possible to avoid the bank deductions? Thank you!

Hi @cjhasaname,

Whether you can apply for a TFN depends on if you hold a valid visa that allows you to work in Australia (as authorised by the Dept of Home Affairs).

It's likely your mother will need to wait until her visa becomes active before she can apply for a TFN.

Take a look at this info about how to apply for a TFN and the conditions you must meet.
