Hi Team

I am trying to understand the use of the statement of supplier or hobby form. I saw the question has already been asked but the answer isn't clear to my case. I play music as a hobby (Singing/guitar), but I'm not a professional, I have a full time job as well that make me unable to have my own ABN. I have been asked to play for a (my first!) 3h gig for $400, and I would like to ensure I can use the statement of hobby form to do this gig legally.

If this is not the right form, can you please confirm what process to follow?

Congrats on landing your first gig!


When you get paid and you don't supply the payer with an ABN, they're obligated to withhold 47% from your payment, pay it to us and you'll get the remainder.


To stop this from happening you'll let them know why you haven't quoted an ABN. You do this by completing and providing them with a statement by supplier. You mentioned you're doing this as a hobby so that'd mean you're not carrying on a business. You'll need choose the option that suits your situation.


If they do withhold 47% they have to supply you with a payment summary to complete your end of year tax return.


Either way from our perspective we have no conditions that can stop you from performing. It's also important that you regularly assess if you're a business in case your situation changes.
