Hi,

This is my first time considering to be an independent contractor. Essentially, I have moved back to Australia recently and my company in Ireland would like to keep me employed by them as an independent contractor. I understand I will need to apply for an ABN, register for GST (as income over $75k) and get insurances - (if there is anything I am missing here, I would appreciate the help/advice)

However GST has proved the most confusing thing for me to research so far. The Irish company require me to send an invoice once per month for payment, do I need to include GST on this invoice to them? It is just for the payment of my work and not for goods and services, so I would have thought that I do not have to include it but would love some help here.

Aside from that, I believe I just manage my taxes through the ATO each quarter and lodge a tax return each year, is that correct?

Thanks for any help on this!!!

Wouldn't your work be services?

Most likely you do not charge GST for overseas sales. https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/international-tax-for-business/australians-doing-business-overseas/exports-and-gst

Thanks for the link. The part I wasn't sure of was whether my employment was a service. May seem simple but it is my first time so I wasn't sure. It won't be GST exempt I don't think, as I will be selling the service within Australia for the Irish business.

Thanks again!
