I recently received a notice stating that a General Interest Charge (GIC) has been applied, effective 28 February 2025 and processed on 3 March 2025.

My 2024 tax liability was finalised for the period ending 30 June 2024, and I paid the full amount on 24 September 2024, which was before the due date of 21 November 2024.

As I made my payment on time, I am unsure why a GIC has been imposed. Do I get to request a remission?

Hi @celinek,

Generally, GIC may be imposed where:

  • there's a tax shortfall because of an amendment or correction
  • an instalment of tax is underestimated
  • a return is lodged late.

You may be able to look at your ATO profile in myGov to see what/why the GIC has been imposed. I'd check to see if it relates to your FY2024 return or not.

I've linked Remission of interest charges info.
