Macquarie no longer receives cheques - I received a cheque from the ATO - do I just tear the cheque up and will I get credit for this as ATO will see I have not banked it - presume so?

You should call ATO to see if they can cancel the cheque. Otherwise you would need to wait till the cheque expires. I think the cheque is valid for 15 months.
