Hello. Two days ago, I tried to apply for a TFN, but I mistakenly applied on a different site and paid $85. I realized my mistake right away and sent a cancellation email. The company replied that they would cancel it, and the money was returned to me immediately. However, this afternoon, the money was deducted again. What should I do in this situation?

I think the ATO/government should make it illegal for third parties to offer the service of applying for a tax file number on behalf of someone else (online), unless you personally seek the help of a qualified tax agent at a proper premises - NOT an online site. If you do this online, how do you know your personal details are protected from fraud and in the event of fraud, who will be held accountable? I am sorry for what happened to you and I hope you get your money back.
Unfortunately, ATO can't do much for you since you paid a 3rd party.
I think it would be best to talk to your bank and see if the money can be retreived or if you use credit card, bank reimburse you.
