My tax return was submitted on the 28th Jul 2024, it is now 5th May 2025. Why is it taking so long. When I try to speak to an operator over the phone I just either get directed to the online portal or just a generic prerecorded messaging stating "peak demands" in calls before ending it.

Is there truly no way I can follow up to receive my tax return which is of a substantial amount?

The status of the return has been "Balancing account" for months. It's almost time for my next tax return and the last financial year has not even been processed yet.

When an individual is late on payments, they are imposed penalties or fines, will I get back payment on interest if the ATO is late on returns?

Hi @WilsonW

That does sound a little strange that your tax return is taking this long.

When your return has the status of 'Balancing Account', it means we're balancing the result of your tax return against your accounts with us and other Australian Government Agencies to work out if you'll have a refund or a tax bill.

Without access to your account on this platform, we can't say why it's taking this long for you to receive your refund. For privacy and security reasons, the only way for you to get this info is by calling our individuals team. We'd suggest calling either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid long wait times.

Hi mate,

I am in the same situation as you. It has been sitting on “Balancing Accounts” for more than 9 months now. Did you get any outcome?
