Hey all, I’m just wondering how to go about paying taxes if I’m being paid as a consultant?

For some context as it’s a bit of a weird situation; I am assisting sales on a shopify store. The revenue made has deductions, such as shopify fees, stock feed, etc and I am paid the remainder.

It’s almost like I’m a sole trader but it isn’t my company, for now I am helping it run in the meantime.

All revenue is not received directly to me, it goes to the owner & each fortnight they remove deductions and pay forward the remainder to me. On the invoice / receipt I receive (that they generate for me each fortnight), it says “consultancy services” so I’m assuming this is correct.

I only receive roughy 1-1.3k per fortnight, so it’s not crazy big numbers but I’d like to figure out the tax stuff lol.

I’m just unsure how to go forward and I haven’t had much help asking those around me. Can someone please help me out? Thanks!

Simply enter the income earned into your 2025 tax return. The ATO will assess your tax liability and send you a an assessment notice with your tax liability.

If you have a tax payable then you may be automatically entered into the PAYG instalment system.
