My father passed away and I have been left a share of his music royalties which will be paid quarterly through APRA. I do not work at the moment. Do I need to get myself an ABN?

@kab16

According to the ABR (Australian Business Register) you would not be entitled to one unless you are intending to run a business (or an enterprise). Information in link explains this.

If you apply for an ABN then your application would be denied unless this is what you are intending to do.

I can only provide a response from a tax perspective. You don't need an ABN as you are not running a business or enterprise.

If you hold an active ABN then the ATO would expect you to use it, which would be reflected by reporting business income in your tax return.

You can report royalties in your tax return without an ABN.
