If I'm claim working from home deductions using the fixed rate method in relation my wages income, must I do the same for my ABN income or can I claim using the actual method instead?

Hiya @KingWill

These are actually two different types of deduction. The working from home deduction is for deductions related to your employment. The home based business expenses is for costs of a running a business from your home.

You can use different methods for each, as long as you don't double dip.

Hi Jay,

Both methods allow for a fixed rate method of 67 cents per hour claim which includes telephone and internet usage. If I claimed a deduction for employment using the fixed rate method and claimed a deduction for my home based business using actual method, which includes telephone and internet usage, would that be considered double dipping?

Hiya @KingWill

As long as it's apportioned properly it shouldn't matter.

Think of it this way, if you do your normal work from home for 5 hours a day and then run your business for 5 hours a day, you'd claim 5 hours for each. This isn't double dipping.

If you claimed 10 hours for the day for both, that would be double dipping.
