Hi,

I’m currently applying for the JobSeeker payment through Centrelink, and they require my partner’s Tax File Number (TFN). However, my partner is a non-resident who currently lives overseas and will be entering Australia on a tourist visa in July 2025 for a short visit of about three months.

She does not have any economic activity or income in Australia and is not eligible to work while on a tourist visa. Given this, I’d like to ask:

  1. Is she eligible to apply for a TFN under these circumstances?
  2. If not, are there alternative options or declarations we can provide to Centrelink to satisfy this requirement?

Thanks for your help

Hi @ahalolo,

You don't have to be working or living in Australia to apply for a TFN and a persons visa doesn't affect anything either.

You just have to have enough identity documents to prove you are who you say you are, to apply for a TFN.

You'll most likely just need to use a paper application (NAT 2628) form as without a visa that allows someone to work, that's the only option. 👌
