I need to cancel my ABN as I haven't worked in a private capacity for over 5 years, and I am no longer working in any capacity. But still need to complete BAS statements, despite years of nil work, I tried to access this online but it did not work, over and over. Why is it so easy to set up an ABN but so hard to cancel it once you have failed? really not good for my mental health

Hi @Anneeliz219,
Cancelling your ABN online is the fastest option as it will take effect immediately. If you're unable to cancel using the instructions in this link, you can contact the ABR or lodge a form.
Alternatively, if you want to ask if you're eligible to backdate your ABN cancellation, call our business team between 8am or 6pm, Monday to Friday. A tax agent can assist as well.
Hi RachelATO - I am in a very similar situation and am doing my best to shutdown a business (via a trust) that has not traded for over a year. I can't get through to the ATO (the voice message pretty much says "we're too busy, try another time"). But the letters I get in the mail say - get in contact to avoid penalties and further action... it's a bit of a stress. I have tried calling multiple times on multiple days. I started looking at forums too now. But your message above says to call too - can you help? We want to know how to prove or show we have not traded since the end of FY 23/24.
