I sold an investment property & made a voluntary BPAY payment to the ATO to cover the expected capital gains tax (plus extra as precaution). I sent way too much and expected it would be returned to me with my tax return but it wasn't. I received my tax return 3 days ago and while ATO acknowledges that money is sitting in my account with them as a credit, it wasn't returned to me with my refund.

How do I request that money is returned to me? I've tried phoning but they say they're experiencing peak demand and cannot answer calls (no option to go on hold). I can't find any forms online....

You need to call.

I believe the online requests for refunds are for tax agents only.

You need to log in to your ATO Online Service via myGov linked service.

From there, you go to Tax - Accounts - Refund Request.

Fill out the necessary information and submit.

It may take up to 28 days.

Huh.... I can see the refund option and I logged in from myGov.

In that case, your best bet is to call the ATO during the non busy period.
