Hi ATO,

I am wondering if the following are included or excluded in the $300 no receipt limit:

  • Laundry (Limit $150)
  • Self-Education (Travel Costs, Assets)
  • Assets under $300
  • Depreciation Assets
  • Travel Costs for Work
  • Work From Home
  • Small Expenses under $10 (Limit $200)

Thanks

The items you've mentioned seem acceptable, @Stevmay , with the exception of assets you're depreciating which of course cost more than $300.

You still need evidence of course, and in some cases you'll obviously need supporting bills/receipts, e.g. gas, electricity and internet bills if claiming working from home expenses in addition to the every-day log of hours.

Your apparently simple question does not have a simple answer. They are all included yet some are excluded depending on what type of answer you are seeking. ATO guidelines are below on work-related expenses of $300 or less.

Records you need to keep | Australian Taxation Office

So if all work-related expenses exceed $300 then receipts are required, except for those that have their own method of claiming - such as cents/km for car expenses, or $1 a load for laundry, or $10 or less up to $200 (diary method). - these would be the only ones where receipts are not required.

So currently, I have these expenses roughly. So do all these count for the $300 expenses limit before requiring receipts or just expenses under other work expenses in ATO form (excluding any assets) which is roughly 35 dollars from small expenses only and I have other expense that I can claim but lost receipts too for up to remaining $265?

Laundry ($20) using 50 cents per wash

Self-Education (Travel Costs, Assets adding to $250), for which I have receipts

Assets under $300 ($189), for which I have receipts

Depreciation Assets ($200), for which I have receipts

Travel Costs for Work ($150) using cents/km

Work From Home ($180) using Fixed Rate Method

Small Expenses under $10 ($35) No receipts

Hi @Stevmay,

Per the 2025 tax return instructions, if your total work related expenses are $300 or more, you need to have receipts for all your expenses. The deduction limit does not include (of the expenses you stated):

  • Travel costs (ensure they are eligible travel costs and not considered private costs)
  • Depreciation assets (normally calculated separately)

The other costs you stated would be included within the $300 limit. You can still claim them (if eligible), you just need to be able to provide a receipt.
