I am a dentist with an ABN. I work at 2 clinics - where I hire the staff/rooms/equipment. I also work from home, often before or after clinical hours, to do treatment planning or continual professional development courses.

Equipment taken to work includes - my laptop, loupes in a hardshell case, professional camera body + multiple camera lenses/attachments. None of this can be stored on-site as I move between 2 different locations.

My question is

  • am i eligible to claim car expenses in this situation? either due to "bulky tools" or working at different locations?

Hi @freckled,

You generally can't claim trips between home and your place of work as this travel puts you in a position to start work and earn income, but isn't part of performing your work duties. The cost of these trips are a private expense, even if you travel from home to a different work location each day.

When we look at claiming expenses due to 'bulky tools', we're talking about tools or equipment that are awkward to transport because of their size and weight.

Have a read through our info on trips you can and can't claim. This will help you work out if you deduct the expense.
